Praise Olatoke's journey from the bustling streets of Lagos, Nigeria, to the bright lights of the NFL is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Lagos, Olatoke relocated to Scotland when he was five years old, a move that paved the way for his diverse athletic career.

His prowess on the track earned him a scholarship at Canada's Trinity Western, and by 2021, he had moved to Ohio State University to further his athletic career. During his time with the Buckeyes track team, Olatoke faced a significant challenge – a torn Achilles tendon. The injury could have derailed his career, but Olatoke's resilience shone through. He found a new passion during his recovery period: football. Despite having no prior experience in NCAA football, he discovered club football at Ohio State.
"I never played NCAA football. The club football is just guys who come together to play football and enjoy a Saturday morning. That's really it. It might be 15, 20 people in a crowd. There could be 50. Who knows?" Olatoke explained. This casual involvement in football was the spark that ignited his NFL aspirations.
The NFL Dream
Olatoke's raw talent didn't go unnoticed. He caught a 65-yard touchdown pass against Michigan State, showcasing glimpses of what was to come. His journey then took him to the NFL International Player Pathway Program (IPPP), a crucial step that brought him to the attention of top NFL scouts.
He was allocated to the Los Angeles Chargers after gaining valuable experience at IMG Academy. Despite attending the Philadelphia Eagles' rookie minicamp, Olatoke wasn't selected. But, as fate would have it, another opportunity emerged.
"After the IPP and stuff, there were a couple of teams that reached out. One of them, obviously, was the Eagles. I went to their rookie minicamp, but that didn't work out," Olatoke recalled. "A few weeks later, the Chargers reached out to me and said, 'Hey, we would be interested in bringing you out to our minicamp'. At first, I wasn't sure what was going on because they only sent me a one-way ticket."
The Breakthrough
The Chargers' interest materialized into a significant opportunity. "On the last day -- which was a Thursday -- one of the staff said, 'Hey, you've got a meeting with the GM'. I walked in and saw the GM. There were a couple of other people there, and they basically said: 'We like you. We think we're going to take a chance on you, so if you're up for it and you're willing to work, we're going to sign you.'"
"There and then, within an hour-and-a-half or so, they offered me a contract, and I'm a Charger," Olatoke shared. It was a moment of triumph and validation for the young athlete, whose journey was marked by sheer determination and a bit of luck.
Against All Odds
"I'm not going to deny that I got lucky to be in this situation. So many different dominoes had to fall my way," Olatoke admitted. His humility and gratitude echo the sentiments of many who have overcome significant odds. His path reflects the astronomical statistics of making it to the NFL. "I think the statistic is one out of every 300,000 or 400,000 high school kids in the U.S. make it to the league," he noted.
