In a significant move to strengthen their offensive line, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Mekhi Becton, a player known for his versatility in both guard and tackle positions. Initially, Becton was brought in as a swing tackle to provide depth behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. However, a recent development has thrust him into a starting role at right guard.
Tyler Steen's Injury Creates Opportunity
The catalyst for Becton's ascension to the starting lineup came when Tyler Steen suffered an ankle injury, leaving a void at the starting right guard position. Becton seized the opportunity during his first practice session with the first team, lining up as the right guard and expertly neutralizing Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. This performance has quickly validated the Eagles' decision to bring him on board.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed his optimism regarding Becton's integration into the team. "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," Sirianni commented, highlighting the potential for Becton to bolster the line alongside established veterans.
Adapting to the Team
Although Becton did not participate in the initial days of training camp, he remained engaged and proactive on the sidelines. His approach impressed his teammates, particularly Landon Dickerson, who noted Becton's adaptability. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" Dickerson remarked.
Becton’s ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line adds considerable value to the Eagles. Dickerson further elaborated, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
Ready for Any Role
Despite the initial setback of not practicing, Becton utilized his time effectively by absorbing insights from his fellow linemen and coaching staff. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton mentioned, reflecting on how he stayed prepared.
In a testament to his readiness and team-first attitude, Becton stated, "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready."
Looking Forward
The Eagles have not disclosed the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, but with Becton stepping up, the team feels confident in maintaining a robust offensive line. While Becton continues to be a valuable component of the second-team offensive line, his recent performance has shown that he is more than capable of filling in as a starter when needed.
As the team progresses through training camp and the preseason, all eyes will be on Becton to see how he further integrates and elevates the Eagles' offensive front. His journey with the Eagles has just begun, but the early signs indicate that he could be a key player for the team in the upcoming season.
