Panthers to Stay in Charlotte: City Council Approves $800 Million Stadium Renovation
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers are set to remain in Charlotte for the foreseeable future, following a significant decision by the Charlotte City Council.
City Council Approves Stadium Renovation Plan
The council voted Monday night to approve a joint $800 million stadium renovation plan with the Carolina Panthers. This decision secures the NFL team's presence in the city for the next 20 years. The city's contribution is substantial, committing $650 million towards the renovation of Bank of America Stadium.
Panthers owner David Tepper will cover the remaining $150 million upfront. Tepper, who has already invested more than $117 million in stadium upgrades, has also agreed to potentially cover an estimated $421 million in overages for capital improvements.
The city's investment will be funded through existing hospitality and tourism tax resources. The vote passed with a 7-3 margin, highlighting both support and skepticism among the council members.
Despite the team's struggles since Tepper purchased the Panthers in 2018, amassing a record of 31-68 and going through six head coaches in a few years, the council was determined not to risk losing the franchise. The Panthers finished last season with a league-worst 2-15 record, yet the council's choice emphasizes their commitment to keep the franchise in Charlotte through 2045.
A Preemptive Measure and Community Investment

Councilman Malcolm Graham highlighted the forward-thinking nature of the initiative, noting, "It is a forward-thinking initiative that aligns with Charlotte's future."
On a more cautious note, Councilmember Tiawana Brown commented, "It sounds real good until we get Mr. Tepper angry, and then he might throw something at the city council."
Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart encouraged the community to embrace the opportunity, saying, "Embrace this opportunity to let the Queen City shine brighter even more so than it did in 2015."
