Mekhi Becton Joins Eagles: A New Chapter with Old Challenges
Mekhi Becton, a former New York Jets offensive lineman, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in May, aiming to rejuvenate his career following a series of setbacks. Becton was expected to serve as a versatile backup for Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, but the Eagles had broader plans for him, asking him to adapt to playing guard.
Adapting to a new position is never easy, but Becton’s transition comes with its own unique set of challenges. During his tenure with the Jets, he faced issues with injuries and inconsistent play. However, the Eagles have given him an opportunity to reset and prove his worth. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," Becton explained, showcasing his readiness to contribute whenever needed.
During the Eagles' mandatory minicamp, Becton has been filling in at left guard due to Landon Dickerson’s absence for personal reasons and a subsequent toe injury. This gave Becton a chance to adapt to the interior line position. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he commented with confidence.
While Becton has yet to play right guard, he’s been competing to challenge Tyler Steen for the starting spot. His understanding of the game's nuances shows his willingness to learn and grow. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," Becton said, highlighting his proactive approach to mastering his new role.
Nevertheless, the transition from tackle to guard has been enlightening for him. "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away," Becton detailed, contrasting it to his experience at tackle where there is more time to react to the defense’s movements.
Despite these challenges, Becton's impressive arm length could be advantageous against defensive tackles. "I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," Becton acknowledged. This physical attribute could give him a unique edge at the guard position.
As preseason practices and games approach, Becton will be under the microscope, tested on his ability to adjust and perform under pressure. His mindset remains clear and focused on seizing any opportunity. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he affirmed. This readiness to contribute in any capacity will be crucial in defining his role within the team.
The next few weeks will be pivotal for Becton and the Eagles. His adaptability, coupled with the physicality and mental fortitude required for the guard position, could offer the Eagles a much-needed solution to their lineup complexities. Becton's journey in Philadelphia is an unfolding story, and his performance in training camp will provide deeper insights into how he fits within the team's broader strategy.
As Becton poignantly stated, "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever." With his new role on the Eagles’ offensive line, Becton is prepared to embrace the challenges ahead and make a significant impact when called upon.
