Diontae Johnson Released by Houston Texans, Faces Uncertain Future
The revolving door of the NFL claimed another player as wide receiver Diontae Johnson was released by the Houston Texans. The timing of this move came with an air of surprise, ahead of a crucial divisional showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson's tenure with the Texans was brief, marking yet another chapter in his tumultuous season.
Acquired from the Baltimore Ravens off waivers on December 23, Johnson's stint with Houston lasted just two games. During this short-lived period, he made a subtle impact on the field. In the regular-season finale facing the Tennessee Titans, Johnson secured two receptions for a total of 12 yards. His contribution continued into the Texans' wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded one catch for another 12 yards. Johnson was present for 16 offensive snaps, representing roughly 22% of the team's plays during their postseason triumph.
These modest statistics, however, do not reflect the potential Johnson exhibited earlier in his career — a career that has seen its fair share of volatility in recent months. The 2021 Pro Bowl selectee was previously part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, and Baltimore Ravens, all within the span of the current season. Baltimore had initially acquired Johnson in October after trading a fifth-round draft pick to the Panthers for a sixth-round draft pick in return.
Johnson's journey this year has been marked by both trades and waiver claims, along with a suspension in Week 15 while with the Ravens for conduct detrimental to the team. Over the course of his career, Johnson has gathered 391 receptions, amassing over 4,363 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns in 77 games. His standout 2021 season with the Steelers included an impressive 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns, earning him his first Pro Bowl nod.
With his departure, the Texans are tasked with reshaping their receiving corps as they continue their playoff campaign. Stepping up to fill the void left by Johnson are talents like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson. Nico Collins remains the top target for the Texans, a team seeking to maintain momentum and exploit their depth amid the postseason battles.
The NFL landscape can be as unforgiving as it is rewarding, and for Diontae Johnson, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining his future in the league. Whether through another team giving him a chance or through self-reflection and strategic career moves, Johnson's journey continues to evoke interest and anticipation among fans and analysts alike.
