In a bold move that could reshape the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive landscape, the team has announced the signing of four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook. Cook, who recently played for both the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens in the 2023 season, worked out for Dallas on Tuesday and was subsequently signed to the practice squad.
Reinforcing the Running Game
The Cowboys, who led the NFL in scoring with an average of 29.9 points per game in 2023, have been looking for ways to bolster their red zone efficiency, which stood at a modest 56.3%. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones emphasized the importance of improving their ground game to enhance offensive consistency. “We needed to have improvement, especially in that red zone, needed to have improvement getting in that end zone with that running game. This all bolsters that up. I’m really pleased with where we are right now at running back,” Jones stated.
Dalvin Cook joins a deep roster of running backs that includes Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott, Deuce Vaughn, and fullback Hunter Luepke. Despite his initial placement on the practice squad, Cook is expected to be a significant contributor once he gets acclimated to the Cowboys’ system.
The Veteran’s Credentials
Cook's resume speaks volumes. The standout running back made the Pro Bowl in four out of his last five years with the Minnesota Vikings, where he emerged as a dominant force. Since 2019, Cook has amassed an impressive 5,238 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as one of the NFL’s premier backs. Known for his powerful running style and consistency, Cook rushed for at least 1,135 yards in each of his Pro Bowl seasons from 2019 to 2022. He also ranks as the third-leading rusher in Vikings’ history with 5,993 yards.
However, 2023 proved to be a year of transition for Cook. Splitting time between the Jets and the Ravens, he garnered 214 rushing yards on 67 carries. Nevertheless, his workout with the Cowboys reassured the team’s brass of his physical readiness. "We had a workout for him. He’s in good shape. He’ll get a lot more work. He will learn the system as he goes, and he could really help us out this year.”
Dealing with Injuries
The addition of Cook comes at a critical juncture for the Cowboys, who are managing injuries on the roster. All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland has a foot injury, but Jerry Jones has expressed no interest in seeking external help for the cornerback position, perhaps indicating a preference to focus on fortifying other areas of the team.
Optimism Moving Forward
Jerry Jones conveyed optimism about Cook’s potential impact on the team. “He’s initially on the practice squad, gives him a chance to get in here and learn the system," Jones remarked. "We had hoped that as time went along in this offseason, we would have an opportunity to maybe look at a player of his stature if the right circumstances came along.”
Recognizing the talent within his current roster, Jones didn’t fail to mention the contributions expected from veteran Ezekiel Elliott. "We’re all excited about what Zeke can do for us," said Jones, underscoring the value of having multiple skilled running backs to handle the rushing duties throughout the season.
A Strategic Addition
Dalvin Cook’s arrival is more than just a boost to the Cowboys' depth chart; it is a strategic maneuver aimed at ensuring the team has the resilience and playmaking ability required to compete at the highest level. His proven track record and versatility could provide the Cowboys with the edge they need to dominate both between the 20s and, crucially, in the red zone.
As Cook begins his tenure with the Cowboys, the team and their fans will watch closely, anticipating the dynamic plays and game-changing performances that have come to define his career. With the Cowboys already possessing a potent offense, Cook’s integration could spell trouble for any defense standing in their way.
