As the Commanders' training camp intensifies, players are putting in significant effort to fine-tune their skills, with a particular focus on red-zone strategies. The recent Tuesday practice, marking the sixth session of the camp, saw the third appearance of fans and the second practice featuring full pads.
One of the key storylines from the session is the competition for first-team reps. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is sharing the role with veteran Marcus Mariota, adding an intriguing layer to the team's development. Daniels displayed his prowess by connecting with Olamide Zaccheaus on a deep pass up the right sideline during an 11-on-11 drill. His precision continued as he found Jahan Dotson along the sideline and executed a solid throw to Terry McLaurin on the opposite side.
The climax of Daniels' performance came during the final team session, where he located Dotson once more, leading to a touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz. However, not all moments were flawless for Daniels; he experienced a bungled handoff with running back Jeremy McNichols and suffered through a series of inaccurate throws.
On the offensive line, Brandon Coleman showcased his versatility by playing both left and right tackle with the first and second teams. Coleman faced a challenging day, going up against seasoned veterans Dorance Armstrong Jr., Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell. Reflecting on his performance, Coleman noted, "There's always like three points in my brain that I'm telling myself in the next period if I didn't do it well. Like today, it was my hands were pretty bad in the first period. I was like, 'Work on my hands, work on my balance, keep my chest up.'"
He elaborated on the complexities of moving from the collegiate level to the pros, stating, "D-linemen in the league have a bunch of secondary and third moves. Their knowledge of what o-linemen do is so vast compared to college... That's stuff that I just have to engrain in my brain, like shit's not over until the whistle blows."
Marcus Mariota also had noteworthy moments, with receiver Tremayne making two significant downfield catches after an initial drop.
On the defensive side, Mike Sainristil has been a constant presence, involved not only in starting defense but also in the return game. Sainristil highlighted his playing philosophy, saying, "Part of it is just my play style. I'm a guy that's gonna go hard until the whistle's blown. And then the second part of it is just getting myself to make that second nature for me, so that when it comes game time, I don’t even have to think about stuff like that."
Jer'Zhan Newton gained his first experience with first-team reps, making an immediate impact by forcing McNichols to cut back during a play. Additionally, K.J. Henry and Javontae Jean-Baptiste made their presence felt, adding further depth to the defensive lineup.
In special teams action, kicker Ramiz Ahmed had a standout day during the team portion of practice, not missing any field goals, including impressive kicks from as far as 51 yards with plenty of distance. This consistency from Ahmed could prove vital as the Commanders look to solidify their special teams unit.
Jahan Dotson has been one of the camp's most consistent performers, showcasing his growing comfort and speed. "I feel like I'm just getting more comfortable, and that's enabling me to play faster and faster. That's been a big emphasis for me," Dotson remarked.
With such dynamic developments across both the offensive and defensive units, the Commanders' training camp continues to offer a blend of promise and areas for improvement. As players like Daniels, Coleman, Sainristil, and Dotson refine their skills, the team looks well on its way to leveraging this rigorous preparation for a competitive season ahead.
