Despite the early disappointment, this moment became a catalyst for Haliburton’s growth. It led him to join Wisconsin United, a Milwaukee-based team that required a three-hour round trip from his home in Oshkosh. This commitment is a testament to his dedication and love for the game.
One memorable practice session with Wisconsin United showcased Haliburton’s unique shooting style. Coach Bryan Johnikin used his 3-year-old grandson as a defender to highlight Haliburton’s low release point, an unconventional technique that has since become his trademark. His shot starts with the ball in front of his chest and ends with a catapult-like motion, creating a significant sidespin. This unorthodox method, while not textbook, has proven to be highly effective. As Pacers guard TJ McConnell puts it, “To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it.”
Haliburton’s shooting prowess is undeniable. Over six seasons spanning his time at Iowa State and in the NBA, he has shot below 40% from behind the arc only once. This dip occurred last season when he rushed back from a hamstring injury, which affected his performance.
