Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach New Carriage Deal
Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have successfully inked a new carriage deal, putting an end to a protracted blackout of the Bally Sports channels for Comcast customers. This development promises to be a game-changer for fans eager to see their local teams back on their screens.
Starting at the beginning of August, Comcast subscribers will once again have access to Bally Sports' offerings. The blackout had stretched over months, leaving many fans without a reliable way to watch their favorite MLB, NBA, and NHL teams. This new agreement is particularly beneficial for Xfinity customers who subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package, which includes live, local sports broadcasts.
Diamond Sports Group, owner of 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, has been navigating bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11 for the past 16 months. Facing financial challenges, the company pulled their channels off the air at the start of May, leaving many fans in markets like Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami in the lurch. However, with the new deal, these fans can now look forward to uninterrupted access to local sports action.
"Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity," said David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.
The agreement includes a few caveats for viewers. Fans of the Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals, and Detroit Tigers can also use Bally Sports' streaming app for in-market viewing options. However, Braves and Twins fans will need to utilize traditional broadcast channels for local game coverage.
David Preschlack has expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the importance of reaching new agreements with the NHL and NBA. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," he stated. This focus is especially pressing with the upcoming NBA and NHL seasons.
Xfinity customers who don't currently subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package can still upgrade to take advantage of this renewed service. They have until August 30 to make the switch, with a free three-month trial being offered for the upgraded package. Following the trial period, the package will cost an additional $20 per month.
Diamond Sports Group holds the linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams, and this new agreement signals a significant move in the company's efforts to stabilize and restructure. "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court," Preschlack added.
For Comcast, this deal reaffirms its strong market presence and offers added value to its "Ultimate TV" subscribers. It underscores the company's commitment to delivering premium sports content, especially in key markets where enthusiasm for local teams runs high.
As Diamond Sports Group moves forward, the completion of agreements with NHL and NBA will be crucial steps. It will not only impact their restructuring efforts but also ensure that fans receive consistent and high-quality sports broadcasts, whether through traditional cable or streaming services.
This agreement marks a much-needed win for sports fans and stakeholders alike, providing a seamless avenue to enjoy local sports amidst complex financial restructuring efforts. As the sports seasons advance, both Comcast and Diamond Sports Group can look forward to meeting fan expectations and restoring the full slate of Bally Sports programming.
